Omwiti wa Mwiti: Man succumbs to Covid-19 hours after appealing for help

Omwiti wa Mwiti, a Kenyan entrepreneur, died of COVID-19 early Monday morning, August 16th, at Mikindani Hospital  in Mombasa merely hours after appealing for blood in his last Facebook post. 

According to his social media handles, Omwiti was a Business Development Manager at Oligro and Founder and Director of Newskin Media Limited.  

Since the first day he contracted the virus, he has been issuing periodic updates of his progress on his Facebook account.

On Friday, 6th August, he posted, “Now last night was tough. Clogged lungs not a good place to be…am at its climax, so far God’s mercies been sufficient. #StaySafe4thWaveIsDeadly.”

7 days later, on Friday 13th, he took to his Facebook account to appeal for urgent help from his friends.

“Morning People. How you doing? This is not a cause of panic but an urgent appeal. Dry cough yanimaliza. I cant do another night. What remedies are you using to manage the cough? My ribs, lower back, chest, diaphragm are in pain due to constant coughing whole night. Oxygen, pulse all are very ok.Kindly assist a brother to overcome,’ he posted.

Hours later, he was admitted to Mikindani Hospital after his condition worsened.

The following day, Saturday, 14, he shared a photo of himself courageously battling for his life on oxygen and appealing for prayers. According to him, it was his 11 hour and nothing else could save him besides God.  

A day later, on Sunday morning, 15th,  Mwiti, a friend of many and urdent follower of Jesus Christ, made a Facebook post again, now appealing to everyone to reach out, donate blood and save his life.

“I need 4 pints O+, Mikindani Hospital. Call Sam 0720732622, ” he requested at 11.11 a.m.

Approximately three hours later, at 2.50 P.M, he added another post, thanking everyone who has reached out and donated blood. He went ahead to appeal for more help.

“So far 3 pints 0+ found. Thanks. Still need more. Help us get it screened today,” he added.

Unfortunately, this was his last post under the sun. By Monday morning, he was pronounced dead.

Many people, especially his friends, have been posting on social media after learning of his death, expressing their anguish and warning others against the the deadly monster.

Francisca Njera posted, “So saaad that Omwiti Wa Mwiti has lost to the Delta thing after winning many other tough battles .. Surely death is such a snare ..so cruel..such a thief that you can’t tell when he is to strike. So far had not met a fighter like you…..fare thee well my friend, “

Gakuo Wangari, recounting of how he immensely supported her business, said “Sijui niandike Nini!Thank you for supporting my business since day 1 Mwiti! God needed” you more in heaven!”

“You fought well bro Omwiti wa Mwiti You taught me many life lessons. You have finished your race, Rest well bro, Till we meet again…” said Dickson Awuoth, another Facebook user.

Heartbroken Lucy Muindi had this tosay, “Oooh!… Why mwiti mwiti.i told you I’ll be coming today,not even a good bye from u buddy.R.I.P my friend.”
