Zanzibar: First Vice President Maalim Seif Sharif passes on weeks after suffering from Corona

A veteran politician and First Vice President of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar (SMZ), Maalim Seif Sheriff Hamad (78), has died.

Addressing the nation on television shortly after his death, President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Hussein Mwinyi, said Maalim Seif died at the Jakaya Kikwete Heart Institute located at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) where he had been hospitalized for about two weeks.

On 31st January, his party ACT Wazalendo issued a press statement and confirmed that Maalim Seif, his wife & aides were hospitalised after testing positive to coronavirus infection.

Until his passing on, Maalim was serving as SMZ’s first vice-president.

Zanzibar’s President Hussein Mwingi has anounced a seven-day mourning period where the country’s flag with be flown at half-mast.
